MRI Scan- Important Things to Know

MRI scanner

With all technological advances and inventions diagnosis of many diseases has become quite easy. MRI is one such technology that is widely used as an investigation measure in various anomalies.

What is An MRI Scan?

MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging is an imaging technique used in the medical field. The technique precisely uses magnetic fields and computer-generated radio waves to produce a detailed image of soft tissues, mainly organs, spinal cord, etc in the human body.

Why Is An MRI Scan Done?

Your doctors will suggest doing an MRI to examine and study your organs, soft tissues, and skeletal system. As it is a non-invasive diagnosis method, it captures high-resolution images of the inside of your body that help to diagnose any problems. MRI can help doctors to detect various anomalies related to the brain, spinal cord, heart, blood vessels systems, bone, joints, and other internal organs.

Types of MRI

The most common MRI examinations are as follow:

Functional MRI (fMRI)

During fMRI doctors (neurosurgeon) usually asks patients to perform certain physical activities to know the functional areas of the brain before surgery.

Magnetic Resonance Venography (MRV)

In a typical MRV scan, the combination of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer is used to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body. The intravenous contrast dye is injected to make veins opaque while imaging.

Breast Scans

As the name would suggest breast scans are done to examine breasts for any problem.

Cardiac MRI

In a typical cardiac MRI scan, the combination of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer is used to produce detailed images of heart structure to find any problem.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)

MRA is used to examine the heart and other soft tissue and blood flow. It involves the combination of MRI and intravenous contrast dye to enhance the presence of blood vessels clear while imaging.

How Do I Prepare For An MRI Scan?

Before proceeding with MRI, your doctors will usually advise you to eat normally and take your daily medication. You need to wear a hospital gown and remove any metal objects such as jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, watches, wigs, dentures, hearing aids, underwire bras, cosmetics that contain metal particles you are wearing.

As MRI involves the use of high-power magnetic fields, doctors will question you about any magnetic or electronic devices as they will either attract magnets or will distort high-resolution images. Objects like metallic prostheses, artificial heart valves, metallic implants, pacemakers, dental implants, and prostheses, etc. may interfere in the process of MRI if they have not been certified against MRI safety.

For patients who have tattoos or permanent makeup also should mention that to the doctor as some inks contain metals.

As far as pregnant women are concerned, during the first trimester when the fetus’s organ development happens it is better to avoid doing MRI till it is mandatory to be done. Breastfeeding mothers should inform the doctor as it may require injecting contrast dye before MRI.

For patients with kidney and liver-related diseases, a certain limitation may happen with intravenous contrast agents.

What Happens During MRI Scan?

MRI machine is a large tube-like structure that is opened at both ends. A sliding table is attached to the machine that moves the patient inside the machine at the desired length. MRI technician monitors your movement inside the machine and is connected with you.

The machine produces tapping and thumping sounds due to sounds produced in the internal part of magnets while taking records. If you are bothered due to these noises then you may opt-out for earplugs to avoid these sounds.

In the case of claustrophobic patients, the sleep-induced drug is administered to reduce their anxiety. Sometimes, contrast dye agents, specifically gadolinium may also be injected into veins by doctors or technicians to get a better picture of the inside structure of affected areas.
The machine creates strong magnetic fields and high-frequency radio frequencies that pass through your body to capture the structure of soft tissues and bone. It is usually a painless procedure. But some might feel a tingling sensation as magnetic fields pass through the nerves of the body.

MRI scans may last from 15 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the examinations required by your doctor. After the test is done, if you are not sedated, then you are discharged home. Your doctors will let you know the final interpretations after studying the scans.
